La dimensión subjetiva en el contacto lingüístico

Resumen:  El presente trabajo propone una reflexión conceptual sobre la subjetividad lingüística aplicada al contacto conflictivo producido por la migración. Valiéndose de los recientes aportes de la filosofía y de la neurobiología, se focaliza la atención en el componente valorativo de base neurológica (el llamado somatic value system), inherente a la cognición general y lingüística. Se establecerá hipotéticamente que este componente se pone en funcionamiento de modo artificial en la interrelación conflictiva entre inmigrantes/originarios. De carácter no innato sino adquirido en el contexto social, tal componente resulta determinante en el modo de percibir las variedades coexistentes en el mismo espacio, pertenezcan o no a la misma lengua y, por lo tanto, también en el modo de conocerlas y, obviamente, de utilizarlas. Se intentará demostrar finalmente que el sistema valorativo, en tanto manifestación de la subjetividad propia de la actividad cognoscitiva del hablante, resulta esencial tanto en el uso pragmático de ambos códigos como en la cognición de la estructura interna de la lengua ajena.

The subjective dimension in language contact

This paper proposes a conceptual reflection on linguistic subjectivity applied to conflictive linguistic contact as a result of migration. Departing from the recent contribution taken from both philosophy and neurobiology, our attention will be focused on the evaluative component (the so called somatic value system), which is inherent to a general and linguistic cognition. It will be hypothesized that such a component re-emerges in a rather artificial way in the conflictive interrelationship between inmigrants and natives. This appraisal system, which is not innate but developed in social context, appears to be crucial in the spatial coexistence of linguistic varieties (whether they correspond or not to the same language). It is also determinant in the way linguistic varieties are perceived and, accordingly, learned and used. Furthermore, it will be demonstrated that the somatic value system, as a manifestation of the subjective dimension of languages, inherent to the speaker’s cognitive activity, is essential in the pragmatic use of both codes and in the cognition of inner linguistic structure of the target language as well.

Procesos de acomodación lingüística de la inmigración latinoamericana en Madrid

Resumen:  En este estudio se ha analizado la posición del colectivo de emigrantes latinoamericanos residentes en Madrid ante un cambio lingüístico universal que afecta al sistema de cortesía. Se han examinado las actitudes lingüísticas de los latinoamericanos ante la cortesía de los madrileños y se han contrastado sus actitudes con su comportamiento lingüístico ante el desplazamiento del eje del poder y su progresiva sustitución por el de la solidaridad. Los resultados ilustran el patrón de acomodación lingüística a la comunidad receptora que es característico de la asimilación social y cultural en la que desembocan los procesos migratorios.

Linguistic accommodation processes of the Latin American immigration in Madrid

Abstract:  This study analyzes the response of Latin American immigrants living in Madrid to a universal linguistic change affecting the system of politeness. We examine the linguistic attitudes of this group towards the politeness system of the native population of Madrid and later, we contrast these attitudes with the group's linguistic behaviour, as immigrants experience a shift away from the power axis and towards its progressive replacement (/substitution) with a solidarity axis. The results illustrate a pattern of linguistic accommodation to the receiving community, which characterizes the social and cultural assimilation associated with migratory processes.

Entre divergencia y acomodación: el caso de los inmigrantes hispanos en Barcelona y Milán

Resumen:  El presente artículo examina los procesos de acomodación y de divergencia lingüística de los inmigrantes hispanos en Milán y Barcelona. Se analiza el rol de la etnicidad, de la identidad y de la percepción como elementos fundamentales en los fenómenos de convergencia en los contextos de contacto entre variedades de una misma lengua y entre códigos distintos, pero tipológicamente cercanos (italiano y catalán). Finalmente, se analizan los niveles más afectados por la transferencia y la convergencia.

Divergence and accommodation: Hispanic immigrants in Barcelona and Milan

Abstract:  This paper examines the accommodation and divergence linguistic dynamics in Hispanic immigrant groups in Milan and Barcelona. We analyze the role of ethnicity, identity and perception, as basic factors for convergence dynamics in situations of contact between varieties of the same languages, and between different, but typologically similar, codes (Italian and Catalan). Eventually, we analyze the linguistic levels most affected by transference and convergence.

La experiencia literaria 'riqueña': cuestiones de migración, lengua e identidad

Resumen:  El propósito de este artículo es presentar la relación migración-lengua- identidad en las letras puertorriqueñas, analizando cómo este trinomio no sólo se ve reflejado en la temática de las obras de algunos de sus escritores, sino también en la elección del código lingüístico que estos mismos autores hacen a la hora de escribir sus relatos, novelas o poemas –dependiendo del lugar desde donde articulen su discurso. En este sentido, podemos distinguir dos claras tendencias en la literatura ‘riqueña’ actual. Por una parte, se encuentran los escritores que viven asiduamente en Puerto Rico y que escriben primordialmente en español; por otra parte, tenemos a aquellos escritores que adoptaron el inglés como lengua de expresión cuando emigraron a Estados Unidos, principalmente a la ciudad de Nueva York, y que han pasado por este motivo a ser denominados ‘neorriqueños’.

The ‘rican’ literary experience: migration issues, language and identity

Abstract:  The purpose of this article is to show the relationship migrationlanguage- identity in the Puerto Rican literary tradition and to analyze how this trinomial is reflected not only in the topics that some writers explore in their works, but also in the linguistic choice that those authors make when writing their stories, novels, poems – depending on the place where they are writing from. In this sense, we can distinguish two clear trends in the current ‘Rican’ literary tradition. On the one hand, there are some writers who frequently live in Puerto Rico and write basically in Spanish. On the other hand, there are some other authors who adopted the English language when they emigrated to the United States, mainly to New York City, and who have been named ‘Nuyoricans’ accordingly.

Actitudes lingüísticas de los inmigrantes ecuatorianos en Madrid

Resumen:  En los últimos años, la inmigración ecuatoriana en la ciudad de Madrid ha experimentado un importante crecimiento. Este hecho tiene como consecuencia el contacto dialectal entre distintas variedades del español. Las actitudes lingüísticas que los inmigrantes ecuatorianos presentan hacia el habla de los madrileños incidirán de manera directa sobre su proceso de integración sociolingüística. El estudio de estas actitudes lingüísticas nos ayudará a explicar los fenómenos de convergencia y divergencia lingüísticas que subyacen a la teoría de la acomodación comunicativa. Asimismo, en este trabajo, trataremos de mostrar de qué modo inciden el prestigio lingüístico y la identidad en estos posibles fenómenos de convergencia y divergencia que se darán en las variedades estudiadas, así como la importancia que cobran los conceptos de “centro” y “periferia” en la valoración que los hablantes hacen de dichas variedades.

Language attitudes of Ecuadorian immigrants in Madrid

Abstract:  In the last years, the Ecuadorian immigration has experienced an important growth in the city of Madrid. This fact results in the consequence of contact between different varieties of Spanish. The linguistic attitudes that Ecuadorian immigrants present towards the speech of Madrid will have a direct impact on the process of their sociolinguistics integration. The study of these language attitudes will help us explain the phenomena of linguistic convergence and divergence which underlie the communication accommodation theory. Furthermore, in this paper, we try to show how language prestige and identity influence the phenomena of convergence and divergence that will occur in the varieties studied, as well as the importance and evaluation of the concepts of "center" and "periphery" by the speakers’ performance of the varieties mentioned above.

Actitudes lingüísticas. Rumanos en Alcalá

Resumen:  Las actitudes lingüísticas adoptadas por los inmigrantes hacia la lengua de la comunidad receptora son un elemento clave en el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera y, especialmente, en el proceso de integración sociolingüística que experimentan los ciudadanos migrantes en los países de destino. En las siguientes páginas, se presentan los resultados más destacados del Trabajo de Investigación Tutelado: Actitudes lingüísticas de los inmigrantes rumanos en Alcalá de Henares, dirigido por Francisco Moreno Fernández. Los objetivos de esta investigación son analizar las tendencias más destacadas que caracterizan las actitudes lingüísticas adoptadas por este grupo de inmigración y estudiar las relaciones explicativas detectadas entre los elementos que constituyen la actitud lingüística y otros elementos extralingüísticos, en concreto, diferentes aspectos relacionados con el contexto de inmigración, así como, con determinadas características interpersonales e intergrupales asociadas a la identidad social y a la conciencia colectiva. Finalmente, a partir de los resultados obtenidos de orden social y lingüístico, se trata de dar cuenta de la fase del proceso de integración sociolingüística en la que se encuentra este colectivo.

Language attitudes. Rumanians in Alcalá

Abstract:  The linguistic attitude adopted by immigrants towards the target language of the hosting community is a key element in second language learning. This factor is especially important in the sociolinguistic integration process experienced by the immigrant community in the target country. In the following pages, it will be presented the most outstanding results from the tutor-guided research project Linguistic attitudes of the Rumanian immigrants in Alcala de Henares, which has been conducted by Francisco Moreno- Fernández. The aims of this research are, on the one hand, to analyse the most relevant trends which comprise the unique linguistic attitudes adopted by that particular immigration group. On the other hand, this research also attempts to study the explanatory relations between the elements forming the linguistic attitude and other extra-linguistic elements – namely, different aspects connected to the immigration context, as well as, both interpersonal and intergroup characteristics which are tightly knitted to social and collective identity. Finally, according to the social and linguistic results revealed in this research, we shall examine this group’s position in the sociolinguistic integration process.

Aproximación a la fraseología de los inmigrantes (comparación de los materiales del corpus ISPIE y del corpus PRESEEA-Granada)

Resumen:  El artículo presenta los resultados del análisis cuantitativo de las unidades fraseológicas empleadas por los inmigrantes marroquíes residentes en Granada y cuyas entrevistas forman parte del corpus ISPIE. Se examinan cuatro aspectos: la frecuencia de aparición de fraseologismos en general, la frecuencia de aparición de unidades diferentes, la frecuencia de aparición de tipos de expresiones pluriverbales y la aparición de unidades fraseológicas concretas. Los resultados se comparan con un análisis similar efectuado sobre una entrevista de un hablante nativo que forma parte del corpus PRESEEA-Granada. Como resultado, se pueden observar diferencias entre el hablante español y los informantes extranjeros, y, por otro lado, entre los hablantes marroquíes.

An approach to the immigrants’ phraseology (comparison of ISPIE corpus and PRESEEA-Granada corpus)

Abstract:  The paper presents the result of a quantitative analysis of the phraseological units used by the Moroccan immigrants from the Spanish city of Granada and whose interviews are part of the ISPIE corpus. Four aspects are examined: the general frequency of appearance, the frequency of appearance of different units, the frequency of appearance of different types of units and the frequency of specific unites. The results are compared with a similar analysis which has been carried out for one interview of a Spanish native speaker which is part of the corpus PRESEEA-Granada. Differences are observed between the native speaker and non native speakers, on one hand, and within the group of the non native speakers, on the other.
